MAYA R. WILSON
The 2021 ALYSSA JOY STITH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Recipient

Maya R. Wilson, The 2021 Alyssa Joy Stith Memorial Scholarship Recipient

Congratulations to MAYA! She graduated from Cosby High School in May with a 4.26 GPA (unweighted). She is attending Virginia Commonwealth University and is planning a course of study in psychology with a minor in language arts.

While at Cosby High, Maya was a member of the following: Fashion Club (2018-19); Yearbook Committee (2019-20); National Beta Club (2019-21); International Thespian Society (2019-21); Cosby Theater Troupe (cast and costumes, 2019-21); Cosby Honors Theater Class Productions (usher, cast, casting director, costumes, 2019-21).

Maya’s community activities were: Chesterfield County Food Bank volunteer (2017-19); Atlantic Outreach Organization (2019); Brown Grove Baptist Church (BGBC) Youth Ministry (2002-19); BGBC Expressions of Faith Dance Ministry (2008-19); Mercy Maid (2017-18). She enjoys sewing, embroidery, making jewelry, reading, cooking, listening to music, and playing the guitar and video games. She writes that her special interests and skills include fashion styling, theatre, cooking and badminton!

In reading her essay, where she wrote about being quarantined and her thoughts about being in college, some terms that come to mind in describing Maya are thoughtful, insightful, introspective, and mature. She mentioned that despite the heavy workload it imposed, enrolling in AP psychology during her last semester was both enjoyable and very revealing. She discovered some possible different specialties!

Her essay demonstrates that Maya understands that her role as a college student is to be motivated to do her best and be flexible and open to possibilities of unplanned changes if warranted.
